Promoting AI Literacy – A University-School Partnership

AI literacy has become essential in today’s world. This presentation discusses our university-school partnership promoting classroom AI Literacy. Join El Sol Science and Arts Academy and researchers from the University of California Irvine as we explore the expanding need for research, information and practical implementation tools related to AI in schools. The presenters will introduce two projects, CodeAI and Papyrus AI, designed to provide students hands-on opportunities to learn about AI. Through interaction and discussion, attendees will develop practical ideas for fostering AI literacy in their schools.

With 19 years of experience as a dual immersion educator in grades K-8, Ivet brings a wealth of expertise to the realm of bilingual instruction. As a GLAD trainer, she champions language learning strategies, fostering an inclusive environment for all students. In her role as the Academic Program Coordinator at El Sol Science and Arts Academy, she has successfully implemented a STEAM-focused extended day program. Additionally, Ivet's commitment to innovative education shines through her coordination of programs such as Girls Who Code, MESA, Project Scientist, Vex IQ robotics, and NASEF scholastic esports clubs.

Mark Warschauer

Mark Warschauer is a Professor of Education and Director of the Digital Learning Lab at the University of California, Irvine. A former Spanish bilingual STEM and language teacher in. public schools, he conducts research on digital learning, computer science education, and artificial intelligence in education. He works closely with El Sol Science & Arts Academy, a dual immersion charter school in Santa Ana, California, on a research-practice partnership promoting AI/CS/digital learning that builds on the cultural and linguistic assets of diverse learners.

Monique Daviss has been the Executive Director of El Sol Science and Arts Academy since 2005. During her tenure the school has grown in both size and achievement. El Sol has been named the Hart Vision Charter School of the Year, National Center for Urban School Transformation Best Urban School, a California Distinguished School, a Title I Academic Achievement Awardee, a California Association for Bilingual Educators Seal of Excellence Awardee, a Campaign for Business & Education Excellence (CBEE) STAR awardee among other awards and recognitions. The school is a destination for groups interested in dual immersion programs and community school initiatives.
