A Toolkit for AI Innovation: How a Charter School Reimagined College Access

In this hands-on workshop, attendees will learn how Making Waves Academy, a charter school in Richmond, created an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to increase college access for underrepresented students. Through a case study and live demo, attendees will gain strategies and resources to drive innovation in their own charter schools, including frameworks to discover opportunities for innovation. Attendees will also receive free access to the AI tool. Counselors and administrators should attend this session to get inspired about leveraging technology for equity.

Jon Siapno is reshaping college counseling for first-generation, low-income students through AI/ML technology. His work at Making Waves Education Foundation expands access to college counseling in California, where the student-to-counselor ratio is alarmingly high, and personalized guidance is scarce. Jon's academic credentials include a bachelor's degree in education from NYU Steinhardt and post-baccalaureate studies at Teachers College, Columbia University. His experience in New York City Public Schools helped him earn his teaching credential, a foundation that informs his commitment to public education.
