What Does It Mean to Be a Skilled Reader?
Humans are born wired to talk. They learn by being surrounded by spoken language. Learning to read, on the other hand, is different since people don't instinctively know how. In this session, participants will explore what is needed to become a skilled reader. They will learn about the Simple View of Reading and Scarborough’s Reading Rope and explore the strands of word recognition and language comprehension that are required for reading comprehension in a skilled reader. They will be able to apply new understandings to future planning and instruction.
