It’s Complicated: The Relationship of Unions and Charter Schools
Join YMC’s labor attorneys for a session on the evolution of unions in charter schools and insider tips that all administrators need to promote positive labor relations, whether or not a union is present. Attendees will learn about the latest organizing efforts and the common pitfalls to avoid during that process. Drawing on their experience negotiating most of the charter school collective bargaining agreements in the state, the presenters will also explore the primary reasons employees form unions and how to address employee concerns to prevent discord related to unionization.

Chastin Pierman has exclusively represented charter schools in California since 2005. Chastin’s practice covers all aspects of labor and employment law, including serving as a negotiator for school boards throughout California. Chastin frequently works before California’s Public Employment Relations Board in all matters related to unions and charter schools, in particular responding to union organizing campaigns, defense of Unfair Practice Charges, and impasse matters. Chastin has also served as chief negotiator on many of the first labor agreements for charter schools in California.
