Meeting the Needs of Striving Readers

Do you have questions about meeting the needs of striving readers? This session will provide educators with a deeper understanding of universal screening, the science of reading, including theoretical frameworks for skilled reading, and explore why some students struggle. Learn about CA Education Code 53008: K-2 Screening for Reading Difficulties, Including Risk of Dyslexia, and the importance of an MTSS Framework to provide early interventions and instructional practices that are known to be effective based on exciting findings from brain imaging research.

Sacramento County Office of Education
Tami Wilson is a Director II of English Language Arts at the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) and leads the California Dyslexia Initiative (CDI). With over 30 years in education, Tami has developed and delivered statewide training in English language arts, leadership, standards, and accountability. Tami has led and participated in statewide roll-outs of many guidance documents, including the California Dyslexia Guidelines, and supports districts to develop and implement MTSS frameworks that align academic, behavioral, and social emotional learning. Tami is passionate about creating equitable learning environments and provides training, coaching, and support to schools across California.
